Ruby and Sapphire
About
The
EX Ruby & Sapphire
set, released in 2003, marked the beginning of the EX Series in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and brought players into the Hoenn region, featuring iconic Pokémon such as the starter trio Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip, along with the Legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre, whose clash shapes the region’s lore of land versus sea. This set introduced the powerful Pokémon-ex mechanic, where Pokémon-ex had higher HP and stronger attacks but awarded two Prize cards when Knocked Out, adding a strategic risk–reward element to gameplay. It also debuted a new card layout, the return of Darkness and Metal Energy as basic Energy cards, and the introduction of Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies, which replaced earlier Pokémon Powers and added more dynamic abilities to battles. With updated mechanics and a fresh regional focus, Ruby & Sapphire set the foundation for a new era of competitive play while immersing players in the themes and conflicts of Hoenn.Spoilers from Ruby and Sapphire
