Introduction

Now that Chaos Rising is out, we at CardsRealm decided to explore a few interesting single prize cards in Standard. The deck below is considered a rogue strategy, but you can play it in casual matches with friends, and it could perform quite well even in local tournaments.

This time, we'll explore Chesnaught CRI 7 and its ability, Needly Armor. It lets you "counter-attack" whenever it takes damage from enemy attacks, as it puts damage counters on the Pokémon that attacked it based on how many Grass energies are attached to Chesnaught. Let's go!

Deck Structure

Chesnaught: The Main Attacker

Its ability, Needly Armor, states that, if this is your active Pokémon and it takes damage from enemy attacks (even if it is knocked out in the process), you may put 3 damage counters on the opponent's active Pokémon for each Grass energy attached to Chesnaught.

Its attack, Impound (G)(G)(C), deals 160 damage and prevents the opponent from retreating their active Pokémon.

Combo

Considering you need 3 Basic Grass Energy sv2 278 to use Chesnaught CRI 7's attack, Needly Armor will deal 90 damage by default.

Thanks to Meganium MEG 10's ability, which doubles each Grass energy in play, you'll have 6 energies. So, Chesnaught will deal 180 damage with this counter-attack!

Adding that to its attack, which deals 160 damage, and this Chesnaught can deal 340 damage in a single turn!

Yanmega ex: The Main Energy Support

This Pokémon is useful because of the combo involving its ability and its attack. It works like this:

Its ability, Buzzing Boost, lets you get 3 Basic Grass Energy sv2 278 from your deck and attach them to this Pokémon when you move it from your bench to your active spot.

Next, you can use its attack, Jet Cyclone. Besides dealing 150 damage, it lets you move these 3 Basic Grass Energy sv2 278 to your benched Pokémon however you like!

Like so, you'll be able to get the energies you need for Chesnaught CRI 7's attack and also deal even more damage with its ability, Needly Armor!

Recursive Pokémon

Baby Pokémon

Meganium MEG 10's ability, Wild Growth, doubles the Grass energies in play. As such, Chesnaught CRI 7's ability will deal even more damage.

Budew PRE 4's first attack, Itchy Pollen, sabotages the opponent, as it prevents them from using Items in the following turn.

Celebi MEG 12's first attack, Traverse Time, lets you filter resources. Namely, it lets you go through your deck and get up to 3 cards, including Grass Pokémon or Stadiums.

Shaymin DRI 10, in turn, stands out for its ability, Flower Curtain, which protects your benched single prize Pokémon from enemy attacks.

Keep in mind that this doesn't include Rule Box Pokémon. This list plays essentially baby Pokémon, though, so Shaymin DRI 10 works perfectly.

Fezandipiti ex SFA 38's ability, Flip the Script, draws 3 cards if one of your Pokémon was knocked out in the previous turn by an enemy attack.

Finally, Meowth ex POR 62, from Perfect Order, stands out because of its ability. Last-Ditch Catch lets you look for a Supporter in your deck, reveal it, and add it to your hand when you play it from your hand to your bench.

Furthermore, its attack, Tuck Tail, doesn't cost a lot of energies and is quite decent. You can get the resources you need to use it with Yanmega ex DRI 3 and make this Pokémon an excellent alternative attacker. Tuck Tail returns Meowth ex POR 62 itself and all cards attached to it to your hand, so it's an excellent defensive maneuver as well. Like so, your opponent won't get 2 Prize cards that easily by knocking it out.

Lillie's Determination MEG 119 lets you shuffle your hand back into your deck and draw 6 cards. If you have exactly 6 Prize cards left, you'll draw 8 cards instead of 6.

Dawn PFL 87 lets you get Pokémon from your deck, namely, 1 basic Pokémon, 1 stage 1 Pokémon, and 1 stage 2 Pokémon.

It makes this deck quite consistent, as it relies heavily on stage 2 evolution lines.

Surfer SSP 187 lets you swap your active Pokémon with one of your benched Pokémon and also draw until you have 5 cards in hand.

This will be useful when you don't have a lot of resources and when your opponent is playing a stall strategy, as it draw cards and allows you to "save" an active Pokémon.

Boss's Orders MEG 114 lets you pull an enemy benched Pokémon into the active spot. You should use it to knock out any specific problematic Pokémon.

Items to Get Pokémon

Ultra Ball MEG 131 lets you get any Pokémon in your deck (basic or evolution) as long as you discard 2 cards from your hand.

Buddy-Buddy Poffin TEF 144 lets you get up to 2 basic Pokémon with up to 70 HP and put them directly on your bench.

Please note that, if you don't have free space on your bench, you won't be able to play this card.

Bug Catching Set TWM 143 lets you look at the top 7 cards in your deck and get up to 2 cards, including Grass Pokémon (basic or evolution) and basic Grass energies.

Poké Pad POR 81 lets you get a baby Pokémon from your deck. This means Pokémon that don't have a Rule Box (like Pokémon ex, Mega Pokémon ex, and Terastal Pokémon ex in the current format).

Items to Recycle Pokémon and Energies

Sacred Ash DRI 168 lets you recycle up to 5 Pokémon from your discard pile and shuffle them back into your deck.

Energy Recycler DRI 164 lets you recycle up to 5 basic energies from your discard pile and shuffle them back into your deck.

Tools

Air Balloon BLK 79 lets you retreat the Pokémon it is attached to for 2 colorless energies less (C)(C).

It is great on Meganium MEG 10 in particular (as it is a support Pokémon), but you can also use it on Yanmega ex DRI 3.

Heavy Baton TEF 151 is better on Chesnaught CRI 7 almost exclusively, as it only works on Pokémon that cost exactly 4 energies to retreat.

It activates when the active Pokémon it is on is knocked out. If so, it lets you move the energies on it to another Pokémon on your bench, so it essentially lets you reuse the resources in play.

Forest of Vitality MEG 117 lets you evolve your Grass Pokémon faster (as in, evolve them on the same turn you play them, except in the very first turn in the game).

ACE SPEC

Loading icon

This ACE SPEC is similar to Guzma BUS 115 from Sun & Moon. The opponent is forced to swap their active Pokémon with one of their benched Pokémon, and then you will do the same with your Pokémon.

It is quite useful to move Yanmega ex DRI 3 around so that you can use its ability. It can also force the opponent to put their important Pokémon in vulnerable positions, and you can take advantage of this to knock them out.

Suggestion

This ACE SPEC is an Item that lets you recycle up to 5 cards (Pokémon and basic energies) from the discard pile and put them directly in your hand.

As this list plays a 2-2-2 evolution line (both for Chesnaught and Meganium), it would work really well.

Final Words

This deck is quite practical to build. The most expensive card in it is probably Meowth ex POR 62.

One of its main weaknesses is that it heavily relies on two long evolution lines (Chesnaught CRI 7 and Meganium MEG 10). So, even though it plays Dawn PFL 87 to evolve these Pokémon faster, I believe it needs to play at least 2 copies of Rare Candy PGO 69.

Some versions play Teal Mask Ogerpon ex PRE 12. The idea behind this choice is to use its ability to attach one basic Grass energy from your hand to one of your Pokémon, draw a card, and then move that energy to Chesnaught CRI 7 with Energy Switch MEG 115.

However, this would only work with at least 3 copies of Teal Mask Ogerpon ex PRE 12 and 3 Energy Switch MEG 115, which would occupy 6 deck slots that you could use for something else. Furthermore, this combo is slow and predictable, unlike the Yanmega ex DRI 3 combo, which pulls energies from your deck all at once and is quite dynamic.

Please note that this is a "rogue" strategy! It's not extremely competitive, just a very fun option to play on casual matches ("for fun").
