Top 10 Most Expensive Rainbow Pokémon in Sun/Moon
Pokémon-GX
10 - Glaceon-GX (Sun/Moon: Ultraprism)
Ad
To open our list, we have an eeveelution: Glaceon, and this one is an interesting attacker. Its main attack, Frost Bullet deals damage to your opponent's active Pokémon and one Pokémon on their bench at the same time, so it's a "sniper" attacker. Furthermore, its GX attack, Polar Spear, deals 50 damage for each damage counter on enemy Pokémon. This card was great to knock down Pokémon that used Outrage, like Reshiram & Charizard-GX UNB 20.
Its ability, Freezing Gaze, was a type of ability lock, as it disabled abilities on Pokémon-GX and Pokémon-EX, regardless if they were on the active position, on the bench, on the discard pile, and even in players' hands (both of them). Glaceon-GX's ability would be the only one active in the entire game when you used it.
Price: US$45.
9 - Mewtwo-GX (Sun/Moon: Shining Legends)
This card was released in the first Sun/Moon special set. In fact, Mewtwo as a Pokémon has been incredibly popular among the community because it is so nostalgic and was featured heavily in Pokémon media, namely more in the anime series than the game titles.
In terms of playability, it didn't stand out much in Standard at the time, and only its GX attack was interesting. However, it is useful as an option for Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71.
Price: US$54.95.
8 - Umbreon-GX (Sun/Moon: Base Set)
Once again, we have another eeeveelution, Umbreon, which is one of the most popular of all because of its story and background as a "dark Pokémon".
It is versatile because it can be defensive, offensive, and also sabotage your opponent. Its first attack, Strafe, deals a small amount of damage and lets you switch it with one of your benched Pokémon. Its second attack, Shadow Bullet, deals damage both to the active Pokémon and one Pokémon on your opponent's bench.
As for its GX attack, Dark Call, it lets you discard two energies from any enemy Pokémon (active or benched). This can be incredibly strong in Expanded to sabotage anyone who likes to use multiple special energies, like two Double Colorless Energy GRI 166.
Price: US$54.97.
7 - Greninja-GX (Sun/Moon: Forbidden Light)
In two popularity contests held in 2016 and 2020, Greninja was one of the highest-ranked Pokémon in Japan. In 2016, it was one of the top 5 most popular Pokémon, and, in 2020, on Pokémon Day, it was ranked the most popular Pokémon.
That is heavily because of the X/Y anime series, which told Ash's story with his own Greninja. Furthermore, many VGC players consider Greninja the best final evolution Kalos Pokémon.
Nonetheless, in Standard, this Pokémon wasn't that strong and relied on an archetype entirely made of other Greninja, like the ones released in Sun/Moon: Detective Pikachu, to be more consistent.
In Expanded, it is also an option for Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71.
Price: US$59.94.
6 - Suicune-GX (Sun/Moon: Lost Thunder)
Ad
Among the legendary Johto beasts, Suicune is the most popular. It was also more satisfying to play in Sun/Moon's Standard than the other two beasts.
It was a support attacker; a "slippery" Pokémon that deals damage to the board and constantly "retreats" and "prevents damage". If it is knocked out by your opponent, you can use its ability, Phantom Winds, which lets you recycle it back into your deck if it is on your bench alongside all cards attached to it. This will save you many resources you could be forced to discard if it was knocked out.
And, in Expanded, it is a viable option for the Water archetype.
Price: US$61.
5 - Leafeon-GX (Sun/Moon: Ultraprism)
Leafeon-GX was a support Pokémon for the Grass archetype, and was quite strong in Expanded because of its GX attack, Grand Bloom: for each of your benched basic Pokémon, search your deck for a card that evolves from that Pokémon and put it onto that Pokémon to evolve it. It was very useful for control decks like Vileplume AOR 3 and Vileplume BUS 6 (before Rowlet & Alolan Exeggutor-GX UNM 1 came along).
Price: US$71.05.
4 - Mimikyu-GX (Sun/Moon: Lost Thunder)
This was a new Pokémon from the main region featured in this block, Alola, and there are two reasons why it ended up on our list:
It is a very versatile Fairy Pokémon that is quite easy to build, and it was a nightmare for Dragon Pokémon. If you used Mimikyu-GX's second attack, Let's Snuggle & Fall, you'd deal 10 damage plus 30 extra damage for each damage counter on your opponent's active Pokémon. If you applied weakness, you'd double this damage, so you could knock out many Dragon Pokémon with it. In Expanded, for instance, you could knock out the fearsome Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX CEC 156.
As for its GX attack, Dream Fear, it let you pick one Pokémon on your opponent's bench and force your opponent to return it to their deck. So all the effort they put into setting up a "heavy Pokémon" would go down the drain!
Furthermore, Mimikyu-GX doesn't have any weaknesses.
Its lore is also interesting: many people liked the idea it was a rejected Pokémon that wanted to be loved like the main mascot in the franchise, Pikachu. In the anime, Jessie had a Mimikyu as well.
Price: US$71.99.
3 - Rayquaza-GX (Sun/Moon: Celestial Storm)
In our third place, we have Rayquaza-GX, which is quite popular among the community because of its lore, which was shown in the VG, alongside the other two Hoenn Weather Pokémon. Its design is also incredible, and it was inspired by the many Asian legends depicting dragons.
At the time, in Standard (where Sun/Moon was legal), you would use its main attack with Vikavolt SUM 52 to get the Grass and Electric energies you needed. Rayquaza was reasonably strong in terms of HP compared to the other Pokémon in this block (before TAG TEAM), and was considered fast to build.

2 - Lugia-GX (Sun/Moon: Lost Thunder)
This Pokémon was created by screenwriter Takeshi Shudo, and was originally meant to be featured in the second movie of the franchise. It ended up being introduced in the Game Boy games, namely the Silver version.
This card stands out because of its GX attack, Lost Purge: with this attack, you can discard your opponent's active Pokémon and all cards attached to it to the Lost Zone!
Keep in mind that any card sent to this "special discard pile" can't be recycled.
Price: US$150.
1 - Charizard-GX (Sun/Moon: Burning Shadows)
In our first place, we have Charizard-GX!
In the early days of Standard in Sun/Moon, there were many "staples" you could use to set up Charizard, like Kiawe BUS 116.
Its best features are its attacks, namely Crimson Storm, which dealt, at the time, 300 damage and was very strong, as it knocked out anything in this format, and its GX attack, Raging Out. Raging Out lets you discard 10 cards from the top of your opponent's deck!
Price: US$419.99.
Honorable Mentions
Espeon-GX (Sun/Moon: Base Set)
This is another beloved eeveelution, this time the Psychic version, and was a very versatile attacker.
Its second attack, Psychic, is its main damage-based attack, but it was a lot better against those "heavy" Pokémon that needed four or five energies to attack, as it would deal even more damage.
Price: US$32.99.
Lucario-GX (Sun/Moon: Forbidden Light)
This Pokémon was also adopted by the "fandom". The best thing about this card was its first attack, Aura Strike, which dealt more damage if you evolved Riolu to this Lucario-GX on that turn. At the time, many players built and used a deck entirely dedicated to this Pokémon and this strategy.
Price: US$40.
