Top 10 Best Umbreon of All Time

10 - Umbreon (Diamond/Pearl: Majestic Dawn)

Loading icon

This Umbreon is from the Diamond/Pearl block and its ability, Moonlight Veil, states: "Each of your Pokémon that evolves from Eevee has no Weakness, and that Pokémon's Retreat Cost is 0."

It's a pity we can't use this card in Expanded. I truly hope we get another Pokémon with this ability in the future…

9 - Umbreon (Heart Gold/Soul Silver: Undaunted)

Its first attack, Moonlight Fang, is excellent as it prevents all effects, including damage, done to it by your opponent's Pokémon if they have "Poké-Body" or "Poké-Power", which were equivalent to that block's (HG/SS) "abilities".

8 - Umbreon (Black/White: Dark Explorers)

This Umbreon print was meant to sabotage your opponent. You can use it in Expanded nowadays.

- Its first attack makes the enemy Pokémon "Confused", and, as a result, they'll be forced to toss a coin any time they want to attack with their Pokémon on their turn. If they fail, their Pokémon will take 30 damage.

- Shadow Shutdown, on the other side, discards all energies attached to your opponent's active Pokémon if you hit your two coin tosses. You can make sure you'll always hit them with Trick Coin PHF 108 and Glimwood Tangle DAA 162.

7 - Umbreon (e-Cards Series: Aquapolis)

Moving on to e-Cards (keep in mind these are not available in Expanded), this Umbreon's ability is incredibly strong:

As long as Umbreon is your Active Pokémon and has a Darkness Energy AQ 142

attached to it, once during your turn, you may look at your opponent's hand. Choose from it a number of cards up to the number of Darkness Energy AQ 142 attached to Umbreon and shuffle them into your opponent's deck.

In a way, it both sabotages and controls your opponent. At the time, Darkness Energy AQ 142 was considered a special energy, so it was incredibly difficult to attach them to your Pokémon, and you could only use 4 copies of it as well.

Imagine if this ability returned to Standard and Expanded, considering Darkness Energy AQ 142 is now a basic energy? It would be incredibly strong.

6 - Umbreon-EX (X/Y: Fates Collide)

Coming back to some Expanded-legal cards, we have Umbreon's EX version, which has two incredibly useful attacks.

The first one renews your hand, but its second, on the other side, was a nightmare for mega evolutions. Endgame was simply incredible because if you knocked out any mega evolution Pokémon with its 70 damage, you'd get two extra Prize cards.

5 - Umbreon "Prime" (Heart Gold/Soul Silver: Undaunted)

Loading icon

This Pokémon, from the HG/SS block, was a great attacker for the eeveelutions archetype, as it dealt 50 base damage plus 10 extra damage for each "eeveelution" on your board - so you could deal up to 50 extra damage.

Furthermore, you can use its ability strategically when your opponent knocks out Umbreon "Prime", and preserve it.

4 - Umbreon ex (Ruby/Sapphire: Unseen Forces)

Loading icon

Moving on to the Ruby/Sapphire era, the first time Umbreon got an "ex" version, it shared the spotlight with Espeon ex UF 102 in the Unseen Forces set, which was one of the best sets in this block.

Its ability, Darker Ring, forces your opponent to swap one of their benched Pokémon with their active Pokémon whenever you evolve this Umbreon from one of your Eevees in play. The only downside is that they can choose which Pokémon they want to swap.

And, of course, its attack, Black Cry, was incredibly useful against the popular Pokémon at the time.

3 - Umbreon-GX (Sun/Moon: Base Set)

Loading icon

Umbreon's GX version is incredibly flexible.

Its first attack gives you a way to retreat it after you attack, and prevent your opponent from targeting it in the active position (as it usually happens according to the rules of the TCG).

As for its second attack, it is a "sniper" attack similar to Darkrai-EX LTR 88 - it deals a good amount of damage to your opponent's active Pokémon, and a little bit of damage to one of your opponent's benched Pokémon.

Its GX attack lets you discard two energies from one enemy Pokémon of your choosing, and is thus a way to sabotage them.

2 - Umbreon VMax (Sword/Shield: Evolving Skies)

Loading icon

In our second place, we have Umbreon's VMax form from Evolving Skies, which was quite popular in competitive decks with Arceus VSTAR PR-SW SWSH307 to answer Mew VMAX FST 114 (also popular at the time).

Its ability, Dark Signal, works as a sort of "Boss's Orders", but you can only activate it if you evolve your Umbreon V to Umbreon VMax from your hand.

1 - Umbreon & Darkrai TAG TEAM-GX (Sun/Moon: Unified Minds)

Loading icon

In our first place, we have its TAG TEAM version alongside Darkrai. In Expanded, it became strong again after Pokémon ex returned, as they are the prime targets for this TAG TEAM. Their attack, Black Lance, beside dealing 150 damage to the opponent's active Pokémon, deals 60 damage to one of your opponent's benched Pokémon GX or EX (as well as ex).

And, of course, we couldn't forget its GX attack, Dark Moon, which has two effects: for one colorless energy, it stops your opponent from playing any Trainer card in their hand. As for its second effect, if this team has five Darkness Energy BUS 168 attached, they knock out your opponent's active Pokémon instantaneously!

Honorable Mentions

Umbreon (Black/White: Plasma Freeze)

Loading icon

This card was essential for the Plasma Pokémon archetype that was popular throughout the Black/White era, as its ability gave all Pokémon in this archetype 20 extra HP.

Umbreon (e-Cards Series: Skyridge)

Loading icon

This Pokémon was relevant because of its ability (Poké-Body), Dark Gaze, which disables the abilities of benched Pokémon.

Umbreon -Delta Species- (Ruby/Sapphire: Delta Species)

Loading icon

Its ability, Delta Moon, states that, any time your opponent attaches one special energy from their hand on their Pokémon, that Pokémon gets a damage counter (10 damage). At a time when Holon energies were popular, not to mention Darkness Energy and Metal Energy as special energies, this was quite strong.
