About Pokémon Pocket

Today, we'll explore an updated version of one of the most beloved archetypes ever: Charizard ex A2b - 010, which is potentially the best Stage 2 archetype in the entire game.

Recently, this list won one of the most popular grassroots tournaments ever, Frog ex, and surprised us all. This is a reminder that, even though the meta hasn't changed much since last season, we still have a lot to explore.

Charizard ex - Updated

Main Strategy

Deck by Silk24, who won the latest FrogEX Weekly Cup. 191 players competed for US$50 at this event.
Deck by Silk24, who won the latest FrogEX Weekly Cup. 191 players competed for US$50 at this event.

The main idea behind this list is to set up Charizard ex A2b - 010 as safely and fast as possible and lean on Cleffa's attack, which draws Pokémon from your deck. Once your Charizard ex A2b - 010 is in the active spot, it will set itself up with its first attack, Stoke.

If you attach 5 energies to it, it can Knock Out nearly all meta Pokémon. The only exception is Decidueye ex.

Pros

One of the best things about this list is that Charizard ex A2b - 010 has a lot of HP. Currently, we need 2 to 3 strikes to Knock it Out, so, alongside Decidueye ex, it is one of the most resilient cards in the meta.

Despite being a Stage 2 list, it checkmates the opponent quite fast because Charizard ex A2b - 010 attaches energies to itself. This makes your setup quite fast and disables any type of control card your opponent might have.

In practice, this deck is one of the best when it comes to ignoring the opponent and just focusing on attacking them.

Cons

If you don't have an easy way to protect your basic Pokémon, you'll probably lose a Cleffa or Charmander every match. This means you'll always be 2 Prize cards away from losing and will be forced to end the game with Charizard ex A2b - 010 every time.

You also don't have any other win condition besides Charizard. Like so, your opponent can easily guess what you're planning and prepare ahead to deal with you.

And, because this is a Stage 2 list, you'll rely pretty heavily on Rare Candy. At some point, you'll lose precisely because you didn't draw this card or simply because you didn't draw Charizard ex A2b - 010.

This list doesn't play Cyrus or Sabrina either. This may seem weird at first, but please note that this list focuses solely on attacking, so you don't have to worry about controlling the opponent.

Tips and Tricks

Use Repel early on to disrupt your opponent. This might give you an extra turn, which, in turn, will make a huge difference for your setup.

Your Charizard ex A2b - 010 has virtually 300 HP when it is in your active spot (320 if you play Giant Cape) because of Lillie. So, don't be afraid to use it as your main attacker early on.

As for Guzma, it is essential to beat Electrical Chord in some matchups. This card is the main way to setup nearly all Electric archetypes.

Don't be afraid to attack with Charmander and discard an energy. Its attack deals a lot of damage early on, and you can easily get this energy back with Charizard ex A2b - 010.

If you don't like using one copy of Charmaleon, I highly recommend you swap it for one Sabrina or one Pokémon Center Lady.

You can also swap a Red Card for one Potion if you'd rather have more healing.

Finally, don't get too upset if you lose because you didn't draw Charizard ex A2b - 010. This could happen every 7 or 8 matches.
