Scarlet & Violet: Surging Sparks - Products, Cards, and Spoiler Review

Now that we know the new Scarlet & Violet base set, the eighth set, Surging Sparks, will be released on November 8th in the West, we can finally review its products!

This new base set, Surging Sparks, is two Japanese sets combined, namely Paradise Dragona and Super Electric Breaker. These sets were initially inspired directly by a DLC in the VGC: The Indigo Disk, the second part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. A few cards from the Japanese "Starter Decks", ”Stellar Tera Type Starter Set: Ceruledge ex & Sylveon ex” were also merged into this set.

The base Japanese sets which will be in this western version, Surging Sparks, will be released on the following dates: Paradise Dragona will be released on September 13th, 2024, and Super Electric Breaker will be released on October 18th, 2024.

As usual, we'll also get new ACE SPECs, Trainers, and special energies.

Paradise Dragona Japanese Booster

Elite Trainer Box (Regular and Pokémon Center): Pikachu

Regular version:

Pokémon Center version:

These products will only be released in a few months, but this is what they usually cost: the regular version costs around US$49.99 and the Pokémon Center version costs US$59.99. Each one includes:

- One promo Pokémon card featuring an Illustration Rare, full-art foil Magneton. The only difference is that the Pokémon Center version includes two copies of this promo card, and one will have the "Pokémon Center" logo.

- A 7-dice set. One die is a coin-flip die, and the other six dice are damage counters.

- 65 sleeves to protect your cards featuring the Pokémon in the box's theme.

- Poison and Burn plastic markers.

- A box to hold everything, with 4 dividers to keep it organized featuring the theme of the product.

- A "Player's Guide" for this expansion.

- A code card for this Elite Trainer Box for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.

- Nine boosters in the regular ETB, and eleven boosters in the Pokémon Center ETB. Each booster includes 11 cards (10 cards are either Pokémon or Trainers, and 1 card is a basic energy), and a digital code for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.

Surging Sparks - Booster Box

This product includes 36 Surging Sparks boosters. One booster costs around US$4.49, and the Booster Box, which includes all 36 boosters, costs around US$161.64.

Surging Sparks - Blister Unitary Booster

These products will cost around US$5.49.

Surging Sparks - Triple Packs

This product includes 3 Surging Sparks boosters and two different promo cards: Zapdos and Quagsire. It will cost around US$13.99.

Surging Sparks - Premium Blister Checklane (Chandelure & Alakazam)

This product includes 3 "baby" Pokémon and Chandelure's and Alakazam's entire evolution line, and only one Surging Sparks booster. It also includes a coin.

It doesn't have a set price yet.

Surging Sparks - Blister Pack

This product includes one Surging Sparks booster and a collectible plastic coin. Each blister includes a different promo card of Pachirisu and Wooper. It will cost around US$5.49.

Surging Sparks - Booster Bundle

This product includes 6 Surging Sparks boosters and will cost around US$26.94.

Surging Sparks - Build and Battle Box/Pre Release Kit

This product includes 6 Surging Sparks boosters and a fraction of a "deck" focused on one of the promo Pokémon in the kit. The logo of this expansion will be featured in the corners of these Pokémon cards. It will cost around US$21.99.

As we mentioned, this new set will bring us new Stellar Tera Pokémon, a recent addition from Stellar Crown that will also be featured in this set. It will also bring us new ACE SPEC cards, which will be quite interesting.

Pokémon ex

Pokémon ex with the Stellar Tera Mechanic

All of these cards have the same Terastal ability - when they're on your bench, they are protected from any attack damage, enemy or otherwise. From left to right:

Alolan Exeggutor ex

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Exeggcute.

Tropical Fever (G)(W): This attack deals 150 base damage. it also lets you attach any number of basic energy cards from your hand to your Pokémon in any way you like.

Swinging Sphene (G)(W)(F): Flip a coin. If it's heads, if your opponent's active Pokémon is a basic Pokémon, it is knocked out automatically. If it's tails, knock out 1 of your opponent's benched basic Pokémon.

This Pokémon will be great alongside Regidrago VSTAR SIT 136, as its attack, Apex Dragon, copies any attack of Dragon Pokémon in your discard pile.

Flygon ex

Stage 2 Pokémon: it evolves from Vibrava.

Storm Back (F): This attack deals 130 base damage. You may switch this Pokémon with a Pokémon on your bench.

Peridot Sonic (W)(F)(M): This attack does 100 damage to each of your opponent’s Pokémon ex and Pokémon V. (Don’t apply weakness or resistance for this damage.)

This card stands out because of its second attack, a "sniper" attack, but setting up the energy you need to use it will be a challenge.

Ceruledge ex

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Charcadet.

Abissal Blade (F): This attack deals 30 base damage plus 20 extra damage for each energy in your discard pile.

Amethyst Rage (F)(P)(M): This attack deals 280 damage. Discard all energy from this Pokémon.

This Pokémon is from the Stellar Tera Type Starter Set, a thematic, ready-to-play deck sold in Japan.

With it, you'll be able to deal some damage to the board and thus help other Fire attackers knock out enemy Pokémon. Its first attack is also easy to set up.

Honestly, it is just too difficult to set up its second attack and use it.

Sylveon ex

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Eevee.

Magical Charm (P)(C)(C): This attack deals 160 base damage. During your opponent’s next turn, the defending pokémon’s attacks do 100 less damage (before applying weakness and resistance).

Angelite (W)(L)(P): Choose 2 of your opponent’s benched Pokémon. They shuffle those Pokémon and all attached cards into their deck. If 1 of your Pokémon used Angelite during your last turn, this attack can’t be used.

This Pokémon was originally included in the Stellar Tera Type Starter Set, a ready-to-play thematic deck sold in Japan.

Some players in Japan have tested its second attack, Angelite, in the Lost Box strategy with Comfey LOR 79's ability and Colress's Experiment LOR 155. This way, you can use Mirage Gate LOR 163 to attach two different basic energies to your Sylveon and then sabotage strong stage 2 Pokémon. It is particularly efficient if your opponent used Rare Candy PGO 69 to evolve their Pokémon.

Black Kyurem ex

Basic Pokémon.

- Ice Age (C)(C)(C): This attack deals 90 damage. If your opponent’s active Pokémon is a Dragon Pokémon, it is now Paralyzed.

- Black Frost (W)(W)(C)(C): This attack deals 250 damage. This Pokémon also does 30 damage to itself.

This is a second attacker for the Water archetype to deal with Regidrago VSTAR SIT 136.

Latias ex

Basic Pokémon.

- Ability Skyline: Your basic Pokémon in play have no retreat cost!

- Eon Blade (P)(P)(C): This attack deals 200 base damage. During your next turn, this Pokémon can't attack.

As a support Pokémon, it is perfect to revive Iron Valiant ex sv4 89 decks. It will also be great for Gouging Fire ex TEF 38 decks.

Archaludon ex

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Duraludon.

- Ability Alloy Build: When you play this Pokémon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Duraludon during your turn, you may attach up to 2 basic metal energy cards from your discard pile to your Metal Pokémon in any way you like.

- Metal Defender (M)(M)(M): This attack deals 220 base damage. During your opponent's next turn, this Pokémon has no weakness.

This Archaludon ex will be a great attacker for its archetype and, of course, alongside Magnezone ASR 107 and even Metang TEF 114, it will most likely be great against the Fire archetype.

"Baby" Pokémon

Shiinotic

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Morellul.

- Ability Relaxing Lights: Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in the active spot, you may use this ability. Your opponent’s active Pokémon is now Asleep.

- Spiral Rush (G)(C): This attack deals 60 base damage. Flip a coin until you get tails. This attack does 30 more damage for each heads.

This Pokémon is perfect with Jynx ex sv3pt5 124's second attack.

Ho-Oh

Basic Pokémon.

- Flap (F)(C): This attack deals 50 base damage.

- Shining Blaze (F)(F)(C): This attack deals 100 base damage. If you have any benched Tera Pokémon, this attack does 100 more damage.

This Pokémon will be perfect as a secondary attacker in Charizard ex sv4pt5 54 decks.

Quaquaval

Stage 2 Pokémon: it evolves from Quaxwell.

- Ability Uptempo: Once during your turn, you may put a card from your hand on the bottom of your deck. If you do, draw cards until you have 5 cards in your hand.

- Hydro Splash (W)(C): This attack deals 120 base damage.

This card will be great when Bibarel BRS 121 rotates out.

Magneton

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Magnemite.

- Ability Overvolt Discharge: Once during your turn, you may attach up to 3 basic energy cards from your discard pile to your Electric Pokémon in any way you like. If you use this ability, this Pokémon is knocked out.

- Electric Ball (L)(C): This attack deals 40 base damage.

Azumarill

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Marill.

- Ability Twinkling Soap: Double-Edge used by this Pokémon costs only one Psychic energy (P) if you have any Tera Pokémon in play.

- Double-Edge (P)(P)(P)(P)(P): This attack deals 230 base damage. This Pokémon also does 50 damage to itself.

Altaria

Stage 1 Pokémon: it evolves from Swablu.

- Humming Charge (W): Search your deck for up to 2 basic energy cards and attach them to your Pokémon in any way you like. Then, shuffle your deck.

- Cotton Wings (W)(M): This attack deals 100 base damage. Flip a coin. If heads, during your opponent’s next turn, prevent all damage from and effects of attacks done to this Pokémon.

Eevee

Basic Pokémon.

- Ability Boosted Evolution: If this Pokémon is in the active spot, it can evolve during your first turn or on the turn it was put into play.

- Reckless Charge (C)(C): This attack deals 30 base damage. This Pokémon also does 10 damage to itself.

Trainer: Supporter

From left to right:

- Drasna: Shuffle your hand into your deck and flip a coin. If heads, draw 8 cards. If tails, draw 3 cards.

- Drayton: Look at the top 7 cards of your deck. You may reveal a Pokémon (evolution or basic) and a Trainer card (supporter, item, tool, or stadium) you find there and put them into your hand. Shuffle the other cards back into your deck.

- Lisia’s Appeal: Switch in 1 of your opponent’s benched basic Pokémon to the active spot. The new Active Pokémon is now Confused.

- Surfer: Switch your active Pokémon with 1 of your benched Pokémon. If you do, draw cards until you have 5 cards in your hand.

Trainer: Item

Glass Trumpet

From left to right:

- Helper Bell: You can use this card only if you go second, and only on your first turn. Search your deck for a supporter card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

- Obstructive Letter: Your opponent counts the cards in their hand, shuffles them, and puts them on the bottom of their deck. Then, they draw a card for each card they put on the bottom of their deck.

- Dragon's Potion: Heal 60 damage from your active Dragon Pokémon.

- Tera Ball: Search your deck for a Tera Pokémon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

- Dusk Ball: Look at the bottom 7 cards of your deck. You may reveal a Pokémon you find there and put it into your hand. Shuffle the other cards back into your deck.

Trainer: Tool

Counter Gain

Tool: If you have more Prize cards remaining than your opponent, the attacks of the Pokémon this card is attached to cost one colorless energy (C) less.

ACE SPECs

From left to right:

Item - Precious Carrier: Search your deck for any number of basic Pokémon and put them onto your bench. Then, shuffle your deck.

Item - Megaton Blower: Discard all Pokémon tool cards and special energy attached to each of your opponent’s Pokémon, and discard any stadium card in play.

This ACE SPEC is basically a boosted version of Startling Megaphone FLF 97, Field Blower GRI 125, and Enhanced Hammer GRI 124 all at once!

Item - Perfect Mixer: Search your deck for up to 5 cards and discard them. Then, shuffle your deck.

It is an upgraded version of Battle Compressor Team Flare Gear PHF 92.

Item - Energy Search PRO: Search your deck for any number of basic energy cards of different types, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

Special Energy - Rich Energy: As long as this card is attached to a Pokémon, it provides only one colorless energy (C). When you attach this card from your hand to a Pokémon, draw 4 cards.
