Pokémon TCG: Top 10 Best Mewtwo of All Time

In this article, we'll show you the top 10 strongest and most interesting Mewtwo in Pokémon TCG - considering cards from the Wizards of the Coast era until today.

Mewtwo is a well-beloved character, and has a deep history both in the games franchise and the anime series.

10 - Mewtwo (Wizards of the Coast Era: Base Set)

We'll start right away with a Pokémon from the Wizards of the Coast era, Mewtwo BS 10, which was a great card at the time to protect you and prevent all effects of attacks, including damage! You could get it in the Preconstructed Theme Deck ”Zap!” - it included one copy of Mewtwo BS 10.

Its first attack deals damage according to the number of energy cards attached to your opponent's defending Pokémon. It's already a great Pokémon just because of this attack, but its second attack is even better.

Barrier requires you to discard one Psychic energy card from Mewtwo, but, if you do, next turn, Mewtwo will prevent all effects of attacks, including damage, that your opponent tries to deal to it!

Years later, in X/Y block's Evolutions set (when they celebrated Kanto Pokémon), Mewtwo BS 10 got a reprint: Mewtwo EVO 51, but in this update it also got a buff and a nerf.

9 - Mewtwo (Diamond/Pearl: Majestic Dawn)

This Mewtwo from the Diamond & Pearl block features the basic concepts of two of its signature attacks in the history of Pokémon TCG: Energy Absorption and Psyburn. These specific attacks showed up in reprints of promo cards from the Wizards of the Coast era, and also in its first "ex" version from the Ruby/Sapphire: Base Set. Mewtwo once again had these same attacks when it was reprinted in X/Y: Evolutions.

The most interesting thing about this version is that its first attack doesn't cost any energy cards to activate its effect. You can simply use it whenever you like, get two basic Psychic energy cards from the discard pile, and attach them to this Mewtwo. This was outstanding both to set up its second attack to heal 60 points, or to use its main attack, Psyburn.

8 - Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (Ruby/Sapphire: Team Rocket Returns)

This Ruby/Sapphire card was an upgraded reprint of Rocket's Mewtwo G2 14, and had the Darkness subtype (to symbolize how it was "corrupted").

Its attacks have the same base concepts as the Mewtwo above, but it changed and evolved to adapt to the new format at the time.

Its first attack is powerful: if you discard one energy card attached to Rocket's Mewtwo ex TRR 99, you can swap all damage counters on this Pokémon to the opponent's active Pokémon. This was a lot of damage at the time if we consider how much HP each Pokémon in this block had.

7 - Mewtwo-EX (X/Y: BREAKthrough)

This Mewtwo came straight from the X/Y block, when EX cards were dominant, and it is incredible. Its first attack deals damage according to the number of Psychic energy cards attached to it.

We can attach these energy cards with Pokémon like Malamar PR-SM SM117, Xatu PR-SV 59 e Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX CRE 75, and Gardevoir DEX 109.

However, its second attack is also remarkable because it switches all damage counters on Mewtwo with the counters on your opponent's active Pokémon.

And the best of all? It has a lot of synergy with Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71 because of this Pokémon's Perfection ability, which copies attacks from Pokémon-GX, Pokémon-EX, and Pokémon on your discard pile.

6 - Mega Mewtwo-EX -Mega X Form- (X/Y: BREAKthrough)

This Mewtwo had two Mega Evolutions, X and Y. The X version was better because of its main attack, Vanishing Strike, which, at first, deals 150 damage, but, if there's a stadium in play, it "does 50 more damage, and its damage isn't affected by Resistance or any effects on your opponent's Active Pokémon".

The only issue with this card is that it is a Mega Evolution. In Expanded, you'll need a Mewtwo Spirit Link BKT 144 to evolve your Mewtwo-EX without immediately passing your turn, and it also doesn't have a lot of HP.

But, once again, it is a staple for Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71 because of its Perfection ability.

5 - Mewtwo VStar (Sword/Shield: Pokémon GO)

This Mewtwo is incredible because it deals 270 base damage if you discard 3 Psychic energy cards from it as you attack.

As for its VStar attack, you'll use it to target Pokémon V on your opponent's board. You'll deal 120 damage to all Pokémon V, and this damage won't be affected by weakness or resistance.

4 - Mewtwo-EX (Black/White: Next Destinies)

Very famous in the Black/White metagame, Mewtwo-EX NXD 54 was versatile because of its first attack, Ball X.

We also included it in this list because of its history in Pokémon TCG, besides how practical it was to set it up with the resources of the Psychic archetype.

But, still, there are better Mewtwo in this list that can surpass it!

3 - Mewtwo ex Terastal (Scarlet/Violet: Paradox Rift)

Moving forward to the most recent block from 2023/2024, Scarlet/Violet, we have Mewtwo in its Electric Terastal form, which was stronger against Water Pokémon and colorless Pokémon (mostly Flying Pokémon like Lugia VSTAR SIT 139).

What's most interesting about it is its second attack, which deals damage according to the number of Psychic energy cards attached to all your Pokémon. It deals 10 base damage + 30 damage for each energy card attached.

In Expanded, there are a few options we can use to get these energy cards, but these are the main picks: Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX CRE 75 and Gardevoir ex sv4pt5 29, besides Gardevoir DEX 109 to double these basic Psychic energy cards.

2 - Mewtwo VUnion (Sword/Shield: Promo Card)

This Mewtwo was one of the Pokémon VUnion that showed up in the Sword/Shield block. It was by far the best Pokémon released in this format that featured the VUnion mechanic. This is because of not only the brute damage it deals, but also because many players got really far in several important tournaments with it. Here are a few examples:

- The iconic Sander Wojcik used it in his control decks, like at the International USA Championship in 2022, when he got all the way to Top 4. He also used a variation of it at the Stuttgart Regional and got Top 8 there back at the end of 2022.

Its attacks and abilities are exceptional.

1 - Mewtwo & Mew TAG TEAM-GX (Sun/Moon: Unified Minds)

And, in our first place, we have the unbeatable Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71. Its ability, Perfection, opens up a full sea of possibilities in terms of the Pokémon in your discard pile or bench you can copy.

To make sure you can actually use its ability and not stumble on stadiums like Path to the Peak CRE 148 and Silent Lab PRC 140, any time you can, you should use Chaotic Swell CEC 187.

Mewtwo-GX: All Sun & Moon Versions

These Mewtwos are also support cards for Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71. Their attacks might be useful in a few specific strategies, so keep an eye on them in case you need to use them some day.

Their GX attacks are also particularly interesting with Mewtwo & Mew-GX UNM 71.

Mewtwo (Sun/Moon: Unified Minds)

Its ability was incredibly powerful with Scoop Up Net RCL 165. With these two cards, you could, again and again, return Mewtwo UNB 75 to your hand, and create a loop.

However, after Scoop Up Net RCL 165 was banned, this Mewtwo became unplayable, even more so now, with the 2024 rotation.

Mewtwo (Sword/Shield: Crown Zenith)

This Mewtwo has a "counter-attack" effect in its second attack, Limit Break.
